CICC certifications are valid for four years from the last day of the month that the certification was granted. Please refer to the Candidate Information Brochure (CIB) for each certification program for specific recertification policy information.
The four-year certification period ensures that candidates continue to maintain their level of competence without becoming administratively burdensome. Given that many of the general practices and principles do not change substantially, the need to renew the certification every four years provides adequate opportunity to ensure continued competence.
The written examination for certification renewal is a similar examination that is administered to new candidates, and it is not intended for professional development. Rather, it is to ensure that competence has not deteriorated since the last assessment. Thus, the psychometric properties, reliability, and validity are consistent with the caliber of the initial certification examination.
Certificants interested in renewing their credential must undergo an audit to ensure they have completed the appropriate trainings and are a current certificate holder in good standing before they are authorized to take the recertification written and/or practical exam. To begin this process, certificants must first contact their local training center who then contacts CICC to conduct the audit. Once the audit is completed and the certificant is found to be eligible for renewal, the CICC will authorize the certificant to schedule themselves for the written examination. This process is mentioned in the Candidate Information Brochure for each certification program.
